Register of Indigenous Native American tribes residing within the borders of present-day Louisiana at the time of European contact through early colonization (defined by the building of Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Adaes Presidio in 1721 to check French expansion after the establishment of the Fort St. Jean Baptiste des Natchitoches). Additional tribes are currently being researched for possible inclusion.

If you are on the tribal council of a state or federally recognized tribe and believe that your tribe should be added to the register, please contact melissa.collins@laghs.com from your official tribal email account with supporting documentation. Documentation must show that the tribe resided in the present borders of Louisiana before 1721.

Are you Native American?

If you are descended from one of the tribes in the register, you are eligible to receive a certificate. The certificate will have the name of the tribe, your name, and the seal of the LGHS.

Or, do you want a certificate for your tribe? The certificate will have the name of the tribe and the seal of the LGHS. If a certificate has not been issued for the tribe before, the LGHS will also issue a press release certifying that the tribe is an Indigenous Tribe of Louisiana.

Register of Acadians who settled in Louisiana during the colonial period and their descendants.

Register of Slaves who resided in Louisiana before the end of the Civil War and their descendants.
